4 things you SHOULD do when terminating someone

It’s helpful to know what not to say during the conversation, but it’s even more important to know what you SHOULD do in order to terminate someone with poise.

Here are 4 things you should do during a job termination conversation:

1. Be prepared

Practice what you’re going to say ahead of time and prepare yourself emotionally for the conversation. Plan out where you are going to have the conversation and ensure that it is in a quiet space that will respect the individual’s privacy.

2. Be direct

When delivering the news, be clear and confident in your choice to terminate the individual. Keep it brief and make sure you clearly articulate what is happening in order to avoid any confusion about the decision.

3. Be a good listener

Once you deliver the news, pause and allow the employee an opportunity to digest the information you just shared with them. As they are processing the news, try not to interrupt or cut off their comments. Listen, and remember to avoid debate.

4. Provide information

Share any important information the individual will need as they prepare to exit the organization. This may include timelines, benefit information, and details on any outplacement support or transition services they will receive to help them find their next job.

Do You Know the Risks of Terminating Someone?

There are some less obvious costs associated with a termination that could harm your organization. Many organizations offer career transition services (outplacement) to impacted individuals as a way to mitigate these risks.

Increased State Unemployment Taxes

State unemployment taxes directly affect the cost of downsizing. The longer a transitioning employee stays unemployed, the greater your tax liability will be. Reduce your state unemployment tax by getting the transitioning employees back to work faster with outplacement support.

We know how to support you and your organization during this time of change.

Outplacement is a service that employers provide to people who are affected by a reduction in force, a layoff, downsizing, or even for performance-related terminations.

Transitioning employees receive individual help and advice from career coaches to assist with job search, networking, interviewing, and negotiation skills.

Being able to tell terminated employees that they are receiving this support makes it so much easier for you to deliver the difficult news.
